·   Popular beaches in the South of France

Think of the beaches of the French Riviera in the South of France, and instantly you have an image of private swathes of sand where the rich, famous and beautiful entertain each other while lying on designer sun loungers sipping cocktails. If that’s your thing, you’ll certainly find it at Club 55 in St Tropez or Z’Plage in Cannes but if you want to dip your toe in this world for an afternoon it needn’t break the bank – at Castel Plage in Niceand Paloma Beach on Cap Ferrat you can rent a space for around €15.

·   Fine beaches in the South of France

To the west of Marseille is La Côte Bleue, a stretch of coast dotted with calanques (fjord-like rocky inlets) and little creeks as well as sandy beaches. The best way to get there in high season is to take the TER Côte Bleue train from Marseille; the Pass Bermuda allows a day’s travel on this line for €5 per person from July to September. Art lovers should head for the little sandy beach at L’Estaque, where Cézanne once painted views of Marseille, while fans of watersports should book some diving lessons in Niolon; hiring a kayak will allow access to some of the more difficult-to-get-to creeks. The Plage de la Corniche in Sausset-les-Pins and the Anse du Verdon in Carro are easily accessible sandy beaches with free parking.

·   Family beaches in the South of France

If you’re travelling with kids, it’s always a good idea to head to a beach with a Blue Flag. To the east of Marseille, the Plage de la Grande Mer in Cassis is the best family beach in the area while in the South of France, visitors are spoilt for choice: most of the beaches in Six-Fours-les-Plages and Le Pradet have Blue Flags as well as free parking; the Plage de l’Almanarre and the Plage de la Bergerie on the Giens Peninsula are long stretches of sand with world-class windsurfing conditions; over the water on the island of Porquerolles is the Caribbean-esque Plage d’Argent, which has been voted one of France’s loveliest beaches; Sainte-Maxime is another family favourite beach – the Plage des Eléphants is named after the creator of Baba the Elephant who used to live here. In the Alpes Maritimes, Antibes, Cap d’Ail and Nice have plenty of facilities and activities for families.

·   Historic beaches in the South of France

St Raphael has 36km (22.4mi) of coastline and a wide variety of beaches, the most famous of which is the Plage du Débarquement in Dramont. It was here on 15th August 1944 that 20,000 Allied forces landed to take part in Operation Dragoon, which aimed to create a second front in France. Opposite the beach is an island with a tower, known as the Ile d’Or, which was the inspiration for Hergé’s Tintin book L’Ile Noire. Slightly further east is Agay, where Antoine de St-Exupéry, author of Le Petit Prince, spent many holidays in the South of France. A coastal path runs from Port Lucia for 8.5km (5.3mi) to Baumette, allowing walkers access to some of the more remote creeks (often reached by steep steps).

·   Nudist beaches in the South of France

Some of us don’t like to have tan lines when we sunbathe so if that’s you, the Plage de Pampelonne in Ramatuelle, Le Trayas in Théoule-sur-Mer and the Ile du Levant are good bets in the South of France, while the Plage de la Batterie near Golfe Juan is the place to go in Alpes Martitimes.  In the Bouches-du Rhône, some creeks in Carry-le-Rouet, Cassis and Marseille tolerate naturists while the sandy Plage du Pertuis de la Comtesse in the Camargue is a designated nudist beach.
