Grimaud is situated in the Var area of Provence and with 5km that separates the beaches and port of Grimaud from the medieval village and its castle set inland. With its elevated strategic position the castle of Grimaud dominated the surrounding area until the 17th century. In fact the Gulf of St Tropez as it is called today was actually known as the Gulf of Grimaud until the end of the 19th century.

Wandering through the village is a treat. The ‘secret’ meandering lanes are edged with vibrant flora and you can discover the many fountains that adjourn these shady lanes. The houses are a lovely warm-coloured stone with traditional regional terracotta tiled roofs pertinent with this region of Provence.

Throughout the height of the summer (mid July – mid August) there is a ‘Grimaldines’ festival that takes place at the castle every Tuesday evening. This is a festival of music with concerts and lively street performances.

Be sure not to miss the ‘Rue des Templiers’ with its ‘Maison des Templiers’ a 16th century Renaissance style building with three beautiful gothic arches. This is now considered a listed building along with the castle.

Built in true Venetian style, the mainly traffic free town of Port Grimaud is popular with boat owners as many of the properties benefit from their own private berth. The village is arranged into four little islands, these are all joined by canals and bridges. Barges (or coche d’eau) are the other option open to visitors as a means of transportation between the islands in the lagoon. There are shops, restaurants, bars and cafes and two fine sandy beaches all within easy access.

There's a cycling path along part of the coast past Port Grimaud, towards Sainte Maxime. This area is very built-up, though, and it can get very crowded.

Grimaud sits at the edge of the Massif des Maures, and the forested hills stretch out to the west in an arc around the north and to the northeast. There are many trails out here suitable for VTT cycling.
